Football gear goes high fashion

Super Bowl XLVIII is just over two weeks away, and people across the host city of New York are pumped up — and that includes those in the fashion industry. Retailer Bloomingale’s has partnered with the Council of Fashion Designers of America for a charity auction featuring football helmets created by some of the world’s top fashion designers.

There are 48 helmets up for auction, with 100% of the proceeds going to the National Football League Foundation. The charity is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving youth football and sports health and safety. The auction started yesterday and will run until February 4.

Helmets don’t come cheap — some have already soared to over $1,000. But just because they’re expensive doesn’t mean we can’t watch them. Here is a selection of some of our favourites:

(Helmet designers: top row: Billy Reid; top row, left to right: Junk Food, Narciso Rodriguez, Betsey Johnson; middle row, left to right: Rogan, Richard Chai, Loomstate; bottom row : Nicole Miller, Lela Rose, Bloomingdale’s)

You can see all 48 helmets on Bloomingdale’s website.
