Match-by-match predictions for October 2021

Who would have thought that four games into Mel Tucker’s second season with Michigan State football, the Spartans would be 4-0 and ranked 17th nationally? Certainly not me, but I’m not complaining either.

The Spartans are as hot as anyone in college football and they face a critical October that could make or break their season.

With the schedule coming up, there’s a chance Michigan State could win all four games, but there’s also a real possibility the Spartans could go 0-4. The most likely scenario is a 2-2 month or maybe a 3-1 scoreline, but the fans are hoping for a 4-0.

As the team has said many times, they just try to go 1-0 every week.

How will the Spartans fare in October?

Western Kentucky Hills

October 2 East Lansing, Mich.

Western Kentucky scares me. The Hilltoppers are just 1-2 this season, but they have tight losses to Army and Indiana and could easily be 3-0 right now.

Additionally, the Hilltoppers have the No. 2 passing offense in the country behind Bailey Zappe and that could well be a problem for the Spartans secondary who just lost depth to Kalon Gervin. There’s a good chance Zappe will throw the ball 60 times on Saturday and if so, the Spartans have to hope he’s within 5-6 yards per attempt.

Michigan State is going to win this one, but it will be really, really close. I think Kenneth Walker III has a big day against this Hilltopper defense that is giving up a lot of rushing yards.

Oh, and Payton Thorne is also bouncing.

Final score: Western Kentucky 30, Michigan State 38 (5-0)
