North Carolina will be spending time ahead of its noon kickoff with Wofford thanking the seniors and outgoing players for being part of the schedule. But the Tar Heels could spend most of the game contemplating their future as a quarterback.

Junior quarterback Sam Howell is still a game-time decision after sustaining an upper-body injury in his loss to Pitt last week. Sophomore Jacolby Criswell and freshman Drake Maye will be in the spotlight if Howell doesn’t play. Presumably, either Criswell or Maye will be the day one starters of next season, pending Howell’s exodus to the NFL.

“Drake and Jacolby realized that they might just start their first game and be there, and they’ve had a great week,” said UNC coach Mack Brown. “But we also challenged the rest of the guys to play well around them to pick him up and help them out.”

Brown said on Wednesday he still had not determined if and how he would turn both quarterbacks in the game. The goal is to let both play, but trying to win the game was the most important. The Heels (5-5) need an extra win to become bowl eligible.

If called into action, Carolina might look slightly different on offense. Criswell, 6 feet, 220 pounds, is better as a double threat quarterback. Maye, 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, is more of a pocket passer. Brown said offensive staff will tailor their game calls.

“We would run the offense for each of them that we think they will run in the future,” Brown said.

Saturday’s UNC-Wofford game will air on Bally Sports South.
